After spending a few weeks with the Lelit MaraX, I’ve thoroughly tested its capabilities as a prosumer heat exchanger machine. Priced at $2,599, it sits in a competitive bracket where buyers expect top-tier performance.

This compact powerhouse blends traditional heat exchanger technology with a modern temperature management system, offering a unique dual-mode operation to optimise either coffee or steam performance. With its commercial-grade components and smart temperature control, it aims to deliver consistent, cafe-quality espresso in a space-efficient design.

This detailed review covers everything you need to know about the MaraX’s performance in a home setting, from its daily operation and temperature stability to its brewing capabilities and long-term reliability.

Design and Build Quality

The MaraX’s build quality immediately impresses with its extensive use of stainless steel construction. Measuring 52cm deep, 22.5cm wide, and 35.5cm high, it’s notably compact compared to similar machines in its class. While I appreciate the space efficiency, some people might find the height slightly disproportionate to its width.

The brushed stainless steel finish is durable and practical, though it doesn’t have quite the same visual impact as polished alternatives. It also comes in white or black, both accompanied by maple wood details.

Operation and Daily Use

Lelit states the MaraX reaches operating temperature in approximately 24 minutes, which is accurate in my experience. The warm-up process is straightforward, with clear LED indicators showing machine status.

The interface consists of two principal controls: the temperature configuration button and the mode setting button, both accessible only when the drip tray is removed. The mode setting button toggles between XMode Coffee and XMode Steam.

XMode Coffee prioritises brewing temperature stability for more consistent shots but reduces steam power, making milk steaming a bit slower. XMode Steam, on the other hand, maintains higher boiler temperatures for more powerful steam performance, though with slightly less precise brewing temperature control.

I keep mine in XMode Coffee since I value shot consistency over steam speed, but those making multiple milk drinks might prefer XMode Steam. If you want to steam milk before pulling your espresso, you may find that the steam pressure is too low in XMode Coffee (the optimal range is 1.0 and 1.5 bar). One tip that I’ve found useful is to lift the brew lever which “tricks” the machine into thinking you’ve finished your espresso so it will then put extra power to steam.

The temperature control system offers three settings: Warm, Hot, and Extra Hot. I’ve been using the middle ‘Hot’ setting exclusively and found it handles most roasts well, producing well-balanced shots across medium and medium-dark roasts.

Others have suggested the ‘Warm’ setting works particularly well with dark roasts, preventing any bitter notes, while the ‘Extra Hot’ setting can help extract more from lighter roasts.

It’s worth noting that the machine doesn’t display actual temperature numbers, instead relying on these three preset options. While some users might prefer more precise temperature control, I’ve found the middle setting to be a reliable sweet spot for daily use.

Brewing Performance

The L58E group head (based on the traditional E61 group head) incorporates mechanical pre-infusion, which helps achieve even extraction. The pump operates quietly – notably more so than many competitors.

The double manometer system provides clear readings of both pump and steam pressure, offering valuable feedback during extraction.

The machine comes with three IMS precision filter baskets:

  • 9-11g single dose
  • 14-18g double dose
  • 18-21g triple dose

I’ve been particularly impressed with how consistent my shots have been. The dialling in process was straightforward – once I found the sweet spot for my preferred beans, the machine reliably produces the same quality shot time after time. This consistency is a standout feature for a heat exchanger machine.

Steam and Hot Water System

The 1.8L boiler provides more than adequate steam power for home use. The anti-burn steam wand features a two-hole tip and offers good control for milk texturing.

Remember that steam performance varies depending on the selected mode – in Coffee mode, steam pressure is moderated to prioritise brewing temperature stability, while Steam mode maximises steam power.

The hot water wand, while functional, does sit quite close to the brew lever, which can sometimes feel cramped during operation. Both wands feature spring-loaded valves that provide precise control.

Water Management

The 2.5L water tank includes a monitoring system that tracks the number of refills, helping manage water softener filter replacement.

The tank’s fully open top design makes refilling straightforward, though the machine’s height can make this challenging under low cabinets. For this reason, I have just been refilling with a water jug.

Unique Features and Innovations

The MaraX includes several notable features:

  • Energy-saving system that reduces steam boiler pressure during inactivity
  • Coffee Slide portafilter design that prevents contact with work surfaces
  • Adequate clearance for larger mugs
  • Silent pump operation with vibration-dampening
  • Active “Reserve Mode” for power management

Accessories and Included Items

The package includes:

  • LELIT58 2-way portafilter with Coffee Slide spout
  • Three IMS precision filter baskets
  • Blind filter for backflushing
  • Stainless steel tamper with wooden handle
  • Coffee dosing spoon
  • Cup rack
  • 35L water softener filter
  • Initial cleaning kit
  • Cleaning brush

Temperature Stability and Heat Exchange System

The heat exchanger system in the MaraX deserves special attention. The AISI316L stainless steel heat exchanger works in conjunction with a thermosiphon circulation system. I’ve found this design effectively minimises temperature fluctuations – an issue that can occur with traditional HX machines.

The dual temperature probe system continuously monitors both boiler and group head temperatures, automatically adjusting to maintain stability. This means no more guesswork or timing cooling flushes between shots. For home baristas pulling several shots throughout the morning, this is a significant advantage.

Value Proposition

At $2,599, the MaraX competes directly with other prosumer heat exchanger machines as well dual boilers like the Lelit Elizabeth. From what I’ve seen so far, the innovative temperature management system and quality components seem justify the price point.

Ideal User Profile

The MaraX is particularly suited for:

  • Home baristas who value consistency but don’t want complex temperature management
  • Users with limited counterspace
  • Those making 3-4 drinks daily

It might not be ideal for:

  • Those needing precise temperature control
  • Heavy milk drink production environments
  • Users requiring extensive water tank capacity

Long-Term Considerations

The build quality suggests good longevity. Key components like the AISI316L stainless steel heat exchanger and L58E group head are commercial grade. The machine’s design allows for straightforward servicing, though the warranty terms should be carefully reviewed.

Limitations and Considerations

While the MaraX excels in many areas, it has some limitations. The three-step temperature adjustment system, while effective, doesn’t offer the precise control of PID-equipped machines.

In terms of build, the short rubber feet make moving the 18.4kg machine difficult, and the drip tray design could be more user-friendly.

Final Verdict

The MaraX represents a significant evolution in heat exchanger technology. Its innovative temperature management system, quality components, and thoughtful design make it a compelling option in the prosumer espresso machine market.

For those seeking high-quality espresso without the complexity, size, and cost of a dual boiler system, the MaraX offers an excellent balance of performance, convenience, and value.
