Here are some tips and advice on choosing the correct grind size for your cold brew.
Why grind size is important for cold brew coffee
Grind size is important for every type of coffee extraction, including cold brew.
The size of the grounds determines how much flavour is extracted from your coffee, and that extraction rate changes depending on the size of your grind.
With larger particles, there’s less surface area to extract flavour from. On the other hand, smaller particles have more surface area coming into contact with the water.
What grind size should you use for cold brew?
For cold brew, your grind size should be extra coarse.
When brewing cold brew, you need to choose a grind size that will extract just the right amount of flavour and aroma.
You want your cold brew to have a smooth and sweet taste, not an acidic one.
In most cases, you’ll achieve an extra coarse grind size using the largest setting on your grinder. The coffee grounds should look like ground peppercorns or rock salt.
Keep in mind that some handheld burr grinders do not grind accurately at an extra coarse grind size or are not consistent enough for this method of brewing.
Can I use espresso beans for cold brew?
A light roast filter roast is recommended for cold brewing.
This is because dark roasts typically don’t taste great when they’re brewed slowly and at colder temperatures.
You can probably get away with using a light espresso roast though if you plan on adding milk to your coffee since it will help balance out any bitterness.
What is the coffee to water ratio for cold brew?
The ratio of coffee to water is an important decision when making cold brew.
We prefer making our cold brew so that it is ready to drink (as opposed to a concentrate), which requires a 1:10 ratio of coffee to water.
This means that for every gram of ground coffee, you add 10 grams of water. For example, 250 grams of ground coffee with 2,500 grams (2.5 litres) of water.
The strength can be adjusted by increasing the amount of coffee or decreasing the amount of water added. If you want a stronger cold brew, try using a 1:8 ratio instead.
Is Arabica or Robusta better for cold brew?
There are two main types of coffee beans that you can use to make cold brew: Arabica and Robusta.
Arabica tends to be more expensive, but it is also higher quality and has a more nuanced flavour profile.
The lower acidity makes it ideal for a long brewing process, as well. We recommend starting with an arabica bean for your cold brew.
