The Aldi Expressi is a fantastic first pod coffee machine. It is ideal for households looking for an affordable option that does everything expected of an entry-level machine. The Expressi is compact, low-cost, extremely user-friendly, and heats up in just 20 seconds. It doesn’t offer adjustable settings so it is best if you’re looking for simplicity over customisation.
|Pump Pressure||19 Bar|
|Water Tank Size||0.8L|
|Coffee Functions||Espresso, Lungo|
The Aldi Expressi is a low cost pod machine that is small in size with a sleek, slightly boxy appearance. It is the perfect entry level option with its fast 20 second heat up time and generous 0.8L water tank.
The machine has a 19 bar pump that matches the high pressure offered by the more expensive Nespresso machines. This level of pressure helps to extract the full flavour and aroma from every coffee pod.
There are only 3 control buttons so it takes little effort to brew coffee. To help save energy the machine has an auto shut-off function so it doesn’t matter if you forget to switch it off when you’re in a rush.
The Aldi Expressi does not come with a milk frother but Aldi does offer a separate milk frother unit that offers excellent value for money ($29.99 at the time of writing). So if you like milky coffees with foam you will need to purchase a separate milk frother unit.
The Aldi Expressi is user-friendly and produces hot coffee with a thick layer of crema on top. The brewing process is quick and easy, the machine has just 3 buttons. However, it is limited in customisation options which may be a drawback for some users.
The design is sleek with a boxy shape that is easy to store away when not in use. One of the downsides to such a compact model is that it has limited space underneath the coffee spout for cups. An espresso cup or small cup can fit without a problem but larger mugs won’t fit under the machine. The drip tray can be removed to make more space but it is still a tight squeeze.
The Expressi is a great option for enjoying Nespresso-style coffee at a fraction of the price. It’s also ideal if you shop in Aldi as you can pick up coffee pods without going out of your way.
- Compact & easy to store
- Low cost
- Limited options
- Pods only available in-store at Aldi
Aldi Expressi Review Analysis
Design and Construction (5/10)
This little machine is ideal for small kitchen spaces as it doesn’t take up much counter space. It has a plastic body that is lightweight and easy to clean. The 0.8L water tank sits at the back of the machine and is large enough to make a few cups of coffee before a refill is needed. There is not a lot of space underneath the spout, the drip tray is removable to make more room but it’s best suited to using espresso cups or small cups.
Taste & Temperature (6/10)
The Expressi produces hot coffee with a thick crema. The taste and aroma of the coffee are good, especially considering the low price of the pods. This machine uses Expressi pods and there are 12 coffee varieties to choose from as well as hot chocolate pods. There are limited settings options but you can adjust the volume of coffee to suit your preferences.
Ease of Use (7/10)
This is an ideal entry level pod machine as it is very easy to use. It features 3 simple buttons, 2 to select the size of drink you want and 1 for starting the cleaning function. Once the coffee is made the used capsules are automatically ejected into the collection bin, which can hold up to 10 pods. There is an auto shut off feature that helps save energy when not in use.
Milk Frothing (0/10)
The Expressi does not come with a milk frother but Aldi does offer a separate low cost frother for $29.99 if you want to make lattes and cappuccinos. The Expressi milk frother is easy to use, has a 250ml capacity and produces good results with minimal effort.
Cleaning & Maintenance (7/10)
The Expressi has a cleaning cycle that helps keep the machine in top condition. The cycle clears out the internal system and ensures there is no coffee residue stuck inside the machine. The used capsule container should be emptied regularly and may need a wipe clean as it can get a bit damp. The outside of the machine needs a simple wipe with a clean cloth. This is a low maintenance pod machine that ensures making coffee is quick and easy.
