Sure, the Aeropress is a great portable coffee maker. The compact size and affordable price has made it a popular choice for campers and travellers all around the world.

But what if you want something that’s even more compact?

While the original Aeropress continues to have its diehard fans, the Aeropress Go is a more portable and cheaper alternative.

So, which one should you get?

Capacity

The Aeropress Go is the newest addition to the Aeropress family of products. It was released in 2020 and it is a smaller, more compact version of the classic Aeropress.

The major difference between the Aeropress and the Aeropress Go is capacity.

The standard Aeropress makes 1 to 3 cups of coffee, while the Go allows for a single serving.

The Go only holds up to 8 ounces (235ml) of water, compared to the original that can hold up to 17 ounces (500ml). This makes the Aeropress Go great for making one cup of coffee at a time, but not as practical if you’re making coffee for multiple people.

Portability

The AeroPress Go is also lighter than the original version: 160g vs 230g. Both are very light, but if you’re looking for something portable, the Go will do the job better.

In terms of size, the AeroPress Go has a new, compact design that makes it ideal for travel. It’s about one-third smaller than the original.

The AeroPress Go is designed to be a very portable coffee maker. You can easily fit it in your carry-on luggage or backpack without sacrificing too much space. It’s also great for small kitchens and tight countertops with limited room to store appliances.

The container that comes with the Go also adds to its portability (see below).

Storage container

Another big difference is the storage container that comes with the Go. It’s a slim plastic cylinder that’s only slightly bigger than a travel mug of coffee.

The container doubles as a mug and comes with a lid, a scoop, and a stirrer. The mug is lined in soft plastic, which prevents shattering and better insulates your beverage.

Note that the original Aeropress doesn’t come with any kind of case, so if you want to travel with it you’ll need to figure something out in terms of storage.

Funnel

The AeroPress Go doesn’t come with the funnel found on the original Aeropress.

If you have an old funnel that fits on your original AeroPress, then this should fit onto your new Aeropress Go just fine, otherwise, there’s no way to buy one separately.

However, we think you’re fine without it (and Aeropress obviously does as well).

Both models come in two parts

The two versions are very similar in design and function. Both use a filter to make pour-over style coffee and a plunger to press the coffee out of the chamber when it’s finished brewing.

Both the AeroPress Go and original come in two parts. The lower chamber is where you add the coffee grounds and water, and the upper chamber is where you place the AeroPress filter before plunging.

Both models come with a paddle to stir and a scoop to measure out your coffee.

Both models use the same microfilters

AeroPress paper filters fit both the AeroPress Original and AeroPress Go coffee makers. They cut the grit out of your coffee, unlike other press-type coffee makers. They are also biodegradable and compostable.

Both models come with 350 paper filters, but note that the original model comes with a larger holder for filters (the filter holder on the Go can fit 20 filters).

Brew methods

You can use both the AeroPress Go and the original for both the inverted and traditional brewing methods. But, because of the Go’s smaller size, inverted brewing may be less suitable.

We don’t consider this a deal-breaker, especially considering that most people who purchase the Go will do so for its portability, and it can still brew perfectly good coffee in the upright position.

Note that the original model has markings on the cylinder showing how many tablespoons of coffee to use (1, 2, 3).

These markings are not present on the AeroPress Go, but you can still measure using tablespoons or grams using a kitchen scale if you like.

Takeaway

The major differences between these two models are capacity and portability.

Here are the reasons to buy the original Aeropress:

  1. You have plenty of storage space
  2. You want to brew for more than one person at once
  3. You don’t intend to take your coffee maker travelling

For everyone else, the Aeropress Go is a great option with few downsides when compared to the original.
